Stay Fit & Healthy this Winter: DIY Home Gym Tips

Even when it is sunny and warm outside, we have those days when we feel too lazy to pack our bags and hit the gym. When winter arrives and wind and snow become a daily nuisance, it becomes even harder to gain the willpower to leave the comfort of our home in order to exercise. Luckily, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is not that hard even when the weather isn’t cooperating. By creating an indoor gym in your own home, you can have access to everything you need to stay in shape without going out. Regardless of whether you have already bought exercise equipment or not, you can quickly upgrade your space and create your personal gym. So, let’s take a look at the crucial steps.

Find the best spot

The first thing you need to do is find the best place in your home to set up your home gym. A spare bedroom is always a great option, but if you do not have a room to spare, your basement or garage will also do the trick. However, make sure you invest in insulation for walls, so that your indoor gym becomes a comfortable space, cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Also, good insulation will prevent moisture issues and reduce noise levels which comes in handy if you like to crank up your favorite tunes while you work out. If your potential gym is currently full of furniture pieces you do not really need, think about renting a small storage unit so you can carve out some extra space in your home.

Invest in new equipment

Keep in mind that most home gyms do not have a ton of expensive and heavy equipment. However, if you are willing to add more items to your workout space, go with essentials such as dumbbells, kettlebells, medicine balls, a treadmill, or barbells. These are mostly inexpensive and still allow you to work all major body parts, including the bicep, core, and leg muscles. On the other hand, if getting new equipment isn’t in your budget right now, do not worry. There is a wide array of exercises you can perform without any equipment, such as sit-ups, push-ups, and others.

Hang your equipment

Do not underestimate the importance of your gym walls! Maximize your workout space by hanging up your equipment. Use various hooks and shelves to keep your yoga mats, foam rollers, and other items off the floor. If you have a lot of equipment that needs to be stored somewhere, use a modular pegboard. It can hold everything from your music player and water bottles to your towels.

Keep yourself entertained

Would you rather watch an episode of your favorite TV show than work out? Well, why not do both? If you have a stationary bike or a treadmill, use your tablet to watch something while you are exercising. Keeping yourself distracted will make your workout session much easier.

Try something new

Going with the same old routine can quickly become very dull, so research all the ways you can use your equipment to create new routines. Discover new workouts to keep things fresh, and look for exercise apps that suit you. Nowadays, there are a ton of workout recommendations online, so you can easily add variety to your daily gym routines.

Sign up for an online class

If you lack motivation or you are just not a fan of working out alone, think about signing up for an online class. Whether you prefer dance, aerobics, or yoga, you can easily find something for yourself. What is even better, many classes are free or really affordable.

Setting up a home gym doesn’t have to break the bank. Use these tips to create the perfect indoor gym and stay healthy and fit this winter.
