Posture Focused Patient Communication: Initial Exam

When a patient complains of back pain, neck pain or any musculo-skeletal pain, THINK POSTURE.

During your exam, and after you understand their primary complaint, have them stand up, look at a point on the wall, and then LOOK at their posture. Spend 30 seconds… or a minute…and ask yourself “How could this posture be connected to this problem”.  The focus will orient your clinical thinking towards whole body posture and motion, as well as also making a surprisingly effective statement to the patient that THEY are the focus of your attention.

After all, how often has someone looked at them for a minute as they just tried to stand tall?

It’s a  basic, simple and effective way to build patient confidence and rapport…and you will be surprised at how much you can see once you begin to look.

Building a posture practice requires making patients aware of why and how posture is key to their problem. It takes a posture conscious clinician to teach people posture consciousness.
