How Posture Exercise is Beneficial as an Anti-Aging Tool
It really is true when our mothers told us to stand up straight and hold those shoulders back that this would be a very important part of good posture. With stable and strong posture being key to having good balance, it is necessary in aging gracefully and aging well.
I am very aware of the body aches and restrictions of motion that my years of poor posture have inflicted on me. I truly “get” the BAM protocol and am already feeling the benefit of posture exercise. Our patients are “getting it” too and this is very gratifying.
As we age, we tend to lose our balance, fall, and naturally become afraid of falling again. We guard and our bodies adapt to bad patterns. We move less, our shoulders roll forward, and we have forward head posture. We don’t breathe diaphragmatically and do not get the full intake of oxygen that our brain needs. Poor posture also compresses the abdomen, therefore causing our digestion to perform less than optimally, which as we age can contribute to disease. This can also shorten our lives.
Our bodies are designed to move. Posture exercise moves the body and opens up the “folds” or “creases” that we’ve habitually put there through our daily living. In conclusion, doing our posture exercises daily makes our bodies aware of proper posture and also makes it feel like it’s second nature to us. We therefore age gracefully. To quote a famous doctor, “Move, feel and be well”.
