The Pain Cycle
Any type of tissue injury causes a change in the nerve cells. Poor posture, poor balance and increased muscular stress increase unbalance motion. Unbalanced motion leads to distorted patterns then the body compensates. Compensation leads to adaptation.
As a result of this change, tissue changes known as neuroplasticity. The nerve cells (neurons) become able to respond to chemical agents (neurotransmitters) that they did not respond to before, this leads to prolonged pain reactions and inflammation. This is a prolonged functional change in the neurons and leads to an increased sensitivity to the neurons. Structurally, the body changes and loses strength, flexibility, and ease of motion. The nerve cells are now able to respond to both noxious and innocuous stimuli. All stimuli will be perceived as painful. At this point, the tissues become hypersensitive. We now start the whole pain cycle again.
Motion/activity is decreased, balance is lost, new patterns are developed, compensation and adaptation continue, until this cycle is broken.
Chiropractic manipulation and focused posture exercises can break the pain cycle. Chiropractic unlocks joints to move freely through full range of motion, strengthen weak muscles, stretch tight muscles. Controlled, focused posture exercises restore balanced motion, fulfilling the 1st posture principle, “The Body is designed to Move”.
