Posture and Health
The consequences of poor posture are endless. When coupled with the natural aging process it greatly increases the severity of these effects. In order to fully understand how to age healthy one must always consider posture as a predominant factor, due to it having an effect on nearly every system of the body. The rate at which one may age can also be drastically increased if the person has poor posture.
The old anatomist saying is, “structure lead to function.” By having poor posture, over time, will actually change the structure of your body. This change in structure will lead to improper function of the supporting structures. For example when a person has anterior head carriage it causes the posterior cervical muscles to have to work much harder. When you begin to age and the strength and elasticity of the body begins to diminish, extra workload is not good.
With time the internal organs of the body begin to breakdown. With poor posture you compress these internal organs. This added force does not allow the organs to function at maximum potential. An example is the compression of poor posture of the lungs not allowing them to fully expand, or the compression of the vessels of the cardiovascular system not allowing their contents to flow normally.
With the body wanting to breakdown with age we need not add extra stress. By having strong posture we are to allow the body to function at maximum potential. This allows us to fight disease and have less pain throughout our daily life. Posture affects all the systems of the body therefore affecting every aspect of our lives.
