Posture, the Anti-Aging Tool
Have you ever seen an older person who was shorter than the last time you saw them? Have you ever stopped to think about how the loss of height may be affecting the person’s health? As we begin to age the body begins to reshape. The natural pull of gravity coupling with the loss of muscle strength transitions the body into a slouched unhealthy shape. The anatomical principle of structure dictates function is never more evident. As the structure of our body’s change so does the way they function.
The slouched over form of the torso is very unhealthy. The organs that control nearly all internal functions of the body begin to be compressed. This extra pressure applied to the organs causes them to not be able to function at maximum potential. For example when the cavity that houses the lungs becomes smaller it makes it impossible for the lungs to inflate at a maximum level. The cardiovascular, digestive, and lymphatic system all feel the effects of aging with poor posture.
As the spine begins to degenerate because of poor posture there is an excess irritation and pressure distributed to the nervous system. Correct posture can take the stress off of the spinal ne rve roots allowing the nerves to carry a full healthy signal to wherever it may be traveling. It also should be pain free if there is not nerve irritation. Correct, healthy, posture can allow the body to age but not breakdown. It allows the body to function at its maximum potential due to no interference throughout the body’s multiple systems.
