How to aid your recovery after bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery is not an easy thing to get through. It involves weight-loss surgeries, usually a Gastric bypass or other variations of surgery, to make changes to your system of digestion. This is to help you lose weight easier. It is only conducted when the usual routes of exercise and diet have not worked or if you have a serious health problem.

Recovering from Bariatric Surgery

Depending on what your problems are the surgery can help you limit your appetite or reduce the nutrients you absorb. Whilst these benefits are good, it is not easy to recover and as such here is a little advice on what you can do to recover more easily.

Vitamins

After you have had bariatric surgery, you will have to take vitamins for the rest of your life. If you do not, then you will face serious illness. Additionally, you may find it hard to focus, your energy will be low, and your mood may be changeable if you do not ingest the right vitamins. There are plenty of post-bariatric vitamins out there though.

You should look for supplements out there that have plenty of B1 that can convert your food into energy, B12 that helps the production of red blood cells, and iron which can help ease dizziness and light-headedness.

Pain Control

Unfortunately, this surgery has also been noted as quite a painful one to go through. As well as the pain around where your surgery has taken place, you may also feel neck and shoulder pain. You should seek advice from the medical team that conducted your surgery if you feel any pain. You should not wait until the pain becomes unbearable. You should seek to maintain a balanced level of medication so you can manage your pain and not be reliant on them.

Exercises

Doctors and surgeons have suggested that the most effective way to recover is to get as active as you possibly can as soon as possible. Walking short distances and changing positions in bed can improve your blood circulation. If you have good blood flow, your healing should speed up and you should face fewer blood clots.

These do not have to be extremely strenuous exercises but asking your medical team should give you some idea about which exercises you can do without putting yourself at risk.

Sticking to your appointments

After your surgery, the last thing you want to hear is that you will need to go back to the hospital for a check-up. However, these are essential appointments. The doctors and medical team are there to check over you and make sure that you are fully recovered, and that the surgery was a success. There should be usually, 4 appointments in the first year and then annual appointments thereafter.

Post-bariatric surgery

Never forget that surgery is just a tool to help you in your weight-loss journey. It is not a quick fix. You will still need to follow a healthy lifestyle and commit mentally to making these changes. Following steps for a quick recovery, can help you set a routine so that you can continue to live a happy, healthy life.
